The Global Book Alliance (GBA) is a partnership of donor agencies, multilateral institutions, and civil society organizations that are committed to bringing books to every child in the world by 2030. The Alliance was formed in 2018 to end illiteracy through a coordinated effort to shape the book market to better address the growing book gap challenge. The vision, mission and ambitions of the Alliance are set out in our Strategic Plan ‘Closing the Children's Book Gap’.
The Steering Committee, consisting of 11 organizational representatives and led by a Chair, holds decision-making authority for the Alliance. It sets strategy, selects activities for investment (including GBA Flagships), identifies good practices and advocates for their adoption. The Steering Committee meets remotely on a monthly basis to discuss current status and plan next steps. Representatives serve 3 year terms.

Chair (Term beginning in August/Sept 2021.
As the term of the Alliance’s first chair, Joseph Nhan-O’Reilly, comes to an end the GBA is now seeking nominations to fill the role of Chair, a three-year term beginning August/Sept 2021.
The GBA Chair will work with Deputy Chair, Scott Walter, to lead the Steering Committee to perform its key duties and responsibilities. They will also act as liaisons between the Steering Committee and the Secretariat and serve as advisors to the Secretariat leadership.
As recognition grows of the learning crisis and efforts increasingly focus on improving children’s foundational skills, including the ability to read and write, we are working to ensure every child has access to more and better books. This is an exciting time for the Alliance and poses an unrivalled opportunity for our new Chair to shape our work and to make an important contribution to closing the children’s book gap and supporting all children learn to read.
