Family Scholarly Culture and Educational Success: Books and Schooling in 27 Nations

This article surveys the impact of family “scholarly culture” on children’s school achievement and literacy gains. Scholarly culture is measured by the number of books in a family’s home library, and it is thought to be impactful because the practice of reading books and playing literary games gives children a “cultural toolkit” that helps them succeed in school.
